대구광역시 팔공산에 있는 동화사는 493년 신라 소지 마립간 15년에 극달화상이 창건한 유가사를 832년 신라 흥덕왕 7년 심지왕사가 중건했다고 전해진다. 고려말까지 법상종 불교사찰로 유명했으며 고려 명종 20년(1190년) 조계종의 증조 보조국사 지눌이 동화사로 중창하여 오늘에 이르고 있다. 임진왜란때 사명대사가 동화사를 영남승병의 본영으로 삼아 승병을 지휘하던 중요사찰이다.
Donghwasa Temple, located on Palgongsan Mountain in Daegu Metropolitan City, is said to have been founded as Yugasa Temple in 493 AD by the monk Geukdal Hwasang, during the 15th year of King Soji of Silla. It was reportedly rebuilt in 832 AD by National Master Simjiwangsa, during the 7th year of King Heungdeok of Silla. Until the late Goryeo Dynasty, it was renowned as a Buddhist temple of the Faxiang (Beopsangjong) sect. In the 20th year of King Myeongjong of Goryeo (1190 AD), National Preceptor Bojo Guksa Jinul, a patriarch of the Jogye Order, renovated Donghwasa, and it has continued to the present day. During the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War), the temple served as a significant headquarters where Monk Samyeongdaesa commanded the monastic soldiers (Seungbyeong) of Yeongnam.
