[불교사찰] 범어사 Beomeosa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

부산광역시 금정산에 있는 조계종 사찰로 삼국유사에 의하면 신라 문무왕18년 (678년) 의상대사가 창건하였다. 임진왜란때 전소되었다가 광해군5년 다시 재건하였고 6.25전쟁 당시 국군장병유골 안치소로 사용되었다.

Located on Geumjeongsan Mountain in Busan, this temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism was founded by the monk Uisang in the 18th year of King Munmu of Silla (678), according to the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms). The temple was completely destroyed during the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea, 1592–1598) but was rebuilt in the 5th year of King Gwanghaegun's reign. During the Korean War (1950–1953), it was used as a temporary ossuary to enshrine the remains of South Korean soldiers.

[불교사찰] 불국사 Bulguksa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

경상북도 경주시 토함산에 있는 조계종 사찰로 신라 눌지왕때 아도화상이 창건하고 경덕왕때 재상 김대성에 의해 크게 중창되었다. 경내에 있는 석가탑 내부에서 발견된 무주정광대다라니경은 세계에서 가장 오래된 목판인쇄물로 국보로 지정되어 있다.

Located on Tohamsan Mountain in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism was originally founded by the monk Ado during the reign of King Nulji of Silla and was later significantly expanded by Prime Minister Kim Dae-seong during the reign of King Gyeongdeok. Inside the temple grounds, the Great Dharani Sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light (Mugujeonggwang Daedaranigyeong), discovered within the Seokgatap (Sakyamuni Pagoda), is recognized as the world’s oldest known woodblock-printed text and has been designated a National Treasure.

[불교사찰] 화엄사 Hwaeomsa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

전라남도 구례군 지리산 국립공원에 있는 조계종 사찰로 신라 진흥왕5년 (544년) 신라의 고승 연기조사가 창건하였다. 현재 경내에는 조선시대 인조때 건립한 목조건축물 각황전이 국보로 지정되어 있다.

Located in Jirisan National Park in Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, this temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism was founded in the 5th year of King Jinheung of Silla (544) by the eminent Silla monk Yeongi (Yeon-gi) Josah. Within the temple grounds stands Gakhwangjeon Hall, a wooden structure built during the reign of King Injo of the Joseon Dynasty, which has been designated as a National Treasure.

[불교사찰] 대흥사 Daeheungsa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

전라남도 해남군 삼산면 두륜산에 있는 조계종 사찰로 백제 무령왕14년(514년) 아도화상이 창건하였다. 임진왜란때 승군의 총본영으로 승군을 이끌었던 서선대사의 가사가 남아 있다.

Located on Duryunsan Mountain in Samsan-myeon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, this temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism was founded in the 14th year of King Muryeong of Baekje (514) by the monk Ado. During the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea, 1592–1598), it served as the headquarters of the Buddhist monk soldiers, and the robe of Seoseon Daesa, who led the monk army, still remains.

[불교사찰] 송광사 Songgwangsa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

전라남도 순천시 송광면 조계산에 있는 조계종 승보 사찰로 대한불교 조계종의 본사이다. 고려 신종대에 조계종의 창시자 보조국사 지눌이 정혜결사를 송광사로 이전하고 조계종의 본사로 삼았다. 송광사에는 보조국사 지눌을 비롯하여 16명의 국사를 모시고 있는 국사전이 국가문화재 국보로 지정되어 있다.

Located on Jogyesan Mountain in Songgwang-myeon, Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do, this Seungbo (Sangha Jewel) Temple of the Jogye Order serves as the main temple (headquarters) of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. During the reign of King Sinjong of Goryeo, Bojo Guksa Jinul, the founder of the Jogye Order, moved the Jeonghye Gyeolsa (Society for Samadhi and Precepts) to Songgwangsa and established it as the order’s central temple. The Guksajeon Hall, which enshrines portraits of 16 state preceptors including Jinul, has been designated as a National Treasure of Korea.

[불교사찰] 통도사 Tongdosa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

경상남도 양산시 하북면 영축산에 있는 조계종 불보 사찰로 신라 선덕여왕15년(646년) 자장율사가 창건하였다. 불보 사찰 통도사에는 대웅전에 불상을 모시지 않고 석가모니의 진신사리를 봉안하고 있으며 대웅전은 국가문화재 국보로 지정되어 있다.

Located on Yeongchuksan Mountain in Habuk-myeon, Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, this Buddha Jewel (Bulbo) Temple of the Jogye Order was founded in the 15th year of Queen Seondeok of Silla (646) by the monk Jajang Yulsa. At Tongdosa Temple, no Buddha statue is enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall; instead, it houses a relic of the historical Buddha (Śākyamuni). The Daeungjeon Hall itself is designated as a National Treasure of Korea.

통도사는 KTX울산역에서 버스나 택시로 1시간 안에 이동할 수 있다. 버스를 이용하는 경우 양산이 아니고 신평터미널까지 이동하여 버스나 택시를 이용하면 30분안에 도착할 수 있다.

[불교사찰] 해인사 Haeinsa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

경상남도 합천군 가야면 가야산국립공원에 있는 조계종 법보사찰로 신라 애장왕3년(802년) 순응과 이정 두 스님이 창건하였다. 특히 해인사는 세계문화유산 팔만대장경을 보관하고 있는 불교사찰로 팔만대장경 보관하고 있는 장경판전 역시 국가문화재 국보로 지정되어 있다.

Located in Gayasan National Park in Gaya-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, this Beopbo (Dharma Jewel) Temple of the Jogye Order was founded in the 3rd year of King Aejang of Silla (802) by the monks Suneung and Ijeong. Haeinsa Temple is especially renowned for housing the Tripitaka Koreana, a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. The Janggyeong Panjeon, the depository that stores the Tripitaka Koreana, is also designated as a National Treasure of Korea.

해인사는 기차로 이동하기 어렵다. 합천읍내에서도 거리가 멀어 가야산버스터미널까지 버스로 이동하고 여기서 다시 택시를 이용하면 10분안에 갈 수 있다. 서울이나 대구에서 가야산버스터미널까지 직행버스를 이용할수도 있다.

Traveling by train is not convenient. Since the temple is located far from Hapcheon town, it is best to take a bus to the Gayasan Bus Terminal, then take a taxi to Haeinsa Temple—it takes less than 10 minutes by taxi from the terminal. Direct buses to the Gayasan Bus Terminal are also available from Seoul and Daegu.

[불교사찰] 법주사 Beopjusa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

충청북도 보은군 속리산면 속리산국립공원에 있는 조계종 불교사찰로 신라 진흥왕14년 (553년) 의신조사가 창건하였다. 현재 경내에 있는 5층목탑 팔상전은 국가문화재 국보로 지정되어 있으며 국내유일의 5층목탑이다.

Located in Songnisan National Park, within Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, this Buddhist temple of the Jogye Order was founded in the 14th year of King Jinheung of Silla (553) by the monk Uisin. Within the temple grounds stands the Palsangjeon Hall, a five-story wooden pagoda designated as a National Treasure of Korea and the only remaining structure of its kind in the country.

법주사는 기차로 이동하기 어렵다. 보은버스터미널에서 버스나 택시를 이용하여 1시간 안에 갈수 있고 서울에서 이동하는 경우 속리산 국립공원내에 있는 소리산터미널까지 직행으로 운영하는 버스를 이용할 수 있다.

[불교사찰] 마곡사 Magoksa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

충청남도 공주시 사곡면 태화산에 있는 조계종 불교사찰로 신라 선덕여왕9년 자장율사에 의해 창건되었다. 현재 대웅보전, 대광보전, 영산전 3개 건물이 국가문화재 보물로 지정되어 있다.

Located on Taehwasan Mountain in Sagok-myeon, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, this Jogye Order Buddhist temple was founded in the 9th year of Queen Seondeok of Silla by the monk Jajang Yulsa. The temple is home to three buildings—Daeungbojeon Hall, Daegwangbojeon Hall, and Yeongsanjeon Hall—which have been designated as National Treasures of Korea.

마곡사는 기차로 이동하기 어렵다. KTX 공주역은 거의 다른지역에 있으며 공주버스터미널에서 버스나 택시를 이용하여 1시간 안에 갈 수 있다.

[불교사찰] 수덕사 Sudeoksa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

충청남도 예산군 덕산면 덕숭산에 있는 조계종 불교사찰로 고문헌에 언급된 백제시대 12사찰중 유일하게 현존하는 유서깊은 사찰이다. 수덕사 대웅전은 고려 충열왕34년(1308년)에 만든 목조건축물로 이후 여러 차례 중수를 거쳐 오늘에 이르고 있다.

Located on Deoksungsan Mountain in Deoksan-myeon, Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, this Jogye Order Buddhist temple is the only surviving temple among the twelve temples mentioned in ancient records from the Baekje period, making it a site of great historical significance. The Daeungjeon Hall of Sudeoksa Temple, a wooden structure built in the 34th year of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo (1308), has been preserved through multiple renovations over the centuries.

[불교사찰] 직지사 Jikjisa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

경상북도 김천시 대항면 황학산에 있는 조계종 불교사찰 고구려 아도화상이 창건했다는 설도 있으나 신라 눌지왕2년 (418년) 묵호자가 경북 구미 도리사와 함께 창건하고 이후 여러차례 중수를 거쳐 오늘에 이르고 있다.

Located on Hwanghaksan Mountain in Daehang-myeon, Gimcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this Buddhist temple of the Jogye Order is traditionally believed to have been founded by the Goguryeo monk Ado. However, historical records suggest that it was established in the 2nd year of King Nulji of Silla (418) by the monk Mukhoja, alongside Dorisa Temple in Gumi, Gyeongbuk. The temple has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries to reach its present form.

KTX 김천구미역은 너무 멀리있고 일반 기차로 김천 시내에 있는 김천역까지 이동 김천역에서 버스나 택시를 이용하여 직지사까지 1시간 안에 갈 수 있다.

경상북도 안동시 서후면 천등산에 있는 조계종 불교사찰 신라 문무왕12년 (672년) 의상대사가 창건하였으며 대한민국에서 현존하는 가장오래된 목조건축물 봉정사 극락전(1363년중수)이 자리잡고 있다.

Located on Cheondeungsan Mountain in Seohu-myeon, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this Buddhist temple of the Jogye Order was founded in the 12th year of King Munmu of Silla (672) by the monk Uisang. It is home to the Geungnakjeon Hall of Bongjeongsa Temple, which was renovated in 1363 and is the oldest surviving wooden building in South Korea

봉정사 인근에서 꼭 봐야할 명소 :

안동역에서 봉정사는 가까운거리에 있고 인근에 위치한 안동하회마을과 병산서원이 꼭 방문해보아야할 문화유산이다. 첫번째로 안동화회마을은 풍산류씨의 집성촌으로 조선시대 한국 전통가옥이 아직까지 유지되고 있는 전통마을로 세계문화유산에 등재된 중요한 문화유산이다. 두번째로 병산서원은 풍산류씨의 집안 서당으로 만들어져 임진왜란 기간동안 조선을 이끈 명재상 서애 류성룡이 낙향하여 징비록을 집필한 장소로 유명한 장소이다.

Must-Visit Attractions Near Bongjeongsa Temple :

Bongjeongsa Temple is located a short distance from Andong Station. Nearby, Andong Hahoe Folk Village and Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy are cultural heritage sites you definitely should visit.

First, Andong Hahoe Folk Village is a traditional village that served as a clan village for the Pungsan Ryu family. It has maintained its traditional Korean houses from the Joseon Dynasty and is an important cultural heritage site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Second, Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy was originally built as a family school for the Pungsan Ryu clan. It is famous as the place where Seo-ae Ryu Seong-ryong, a renowned prime minister who led Joseon during the Imjin War, retired and wrote the Jingbirok (Book of Corrections).
