전라남도 구례군 지리산 국립공원에 있는 조계종 사찰로 신라 진흥왕5년 (544년) 신라의 고승 연기조사가 창건하였다. 현재 경내에는 조선시대 인조때 건립한 목조건축물 각황전이 국보로 지정되어 있다.
Located in Jirisan National Park in Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, this temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism was founded in the 5th year of King Jinheung of Silla (544) by the eminent Silla monk Yeongi (Yeon-gi) Josah. Within the temple grounds stands Gakhwangjeon Hall, a wooden structure built during the reign of King Injo of the Joseon Dynasty, which has been designated as a National Treasure.

Take the Jeolla Line KTX from Yongsan Station in Seoul to Gurye-gu Station. From Gurye-gu Station, Hwaeomsa can be reached in about 30 minutes by local bus or taxi.
